Building a city takes decades of labor and endless consensus. Vaporizing it takes a single order, a fraction of a second, and absolutely no one's permission.

This asymmetry is reinforced by evolutionary psychology, which wires the brain to prioritize threat detection over reward. A leader who builds infrastructure earns gratitude, an emotion that quickly fades into baseline expectation. A leader who can vaporize a city commands existential terror. Gratitude allows for dissent; terror commands immediate, overriding compliance. The dread of total destruction ensures obedience faster and more reliably than any other mechanism.
This metric reached its logical peak during the Cold War. For decades, the two greatest geopolitical rivals in history did not determine their global supremacy by their agricultural output, literacy rates, or artistic achievements. They measured it in megatons. The defining proof of superpower status was the thermonuclear test.
When the United States detonated the 15-megaton Castle Bravo device in 1954, it yielded a blast 1,000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The ability to unleash the energy of a star to instantly annihilate a coral atoll became the indisputable standard of authority. The ultimate leverage on the global stage was not the capacity to build a better world, but the demonstrated capacity to end it completely.
